Steak Bites, Gravy & Mash Potatoes
Ingredients
- Steak (any cut will do)
- Potatoes (for the mash)
- Carrots
- 1 onion
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
- Any other herbs you want to use – (Rosemary, mixed herbs)
- 2 tablespoons dark soy sauce
- 2 tablespoon tomato sauce
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 2 garlic clove, minced
- 2 tablespoons corn starch (for gravy thickener)
- Cooking oil
- Butter (for the mash)
- Milk (for the mash)
Directions
- Prepare the beef: Dice your steak into cubes or strips, whichever you prefer. Add the soy sauce, sugar, salt, pepper, tomato sauce, cooking oil, herbs, garlic, and diced onions into a pot. Mix well and start cooking it over medium heat. Stir occasionally to ensure it cooks evenly.
- Start the mash: While the beef is cooking, wash and peel the potatoes. Cut them into small cubes for faster cooking. Add the potatoes to a pot of water and bring it to a boil.
- Check the beef: Keep stirring the beef to ensure it doesn’t overcook—you want it to stay juicy. Once the juices reduces, add the dry corn starch. Stir it into the pot to thicken the gravy. Keep stirring to avoid lumps. Add 2 cups of water (adjust based on how much gravy you want). If the gravy becomes too thick, slowly add more water until you reach your desired consistency. Cover the pot and let it simmer for a few more minutes.
- Finish the mash: Once the potatoes are soft, drain the water. Add 1 stick of butter (or 3-4 tablespoons) and 1/4 cup of milk. Mash the potatoes using a fork or potato masher until they’re smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Taste and adjust: Check the beef. Taste the gravy and adjust the sweetness or saltiness to your liking. If you prefer a sweeter gravy, add a bit more sugar. For a more savoury taste, add salt.
- Serve: Plate the creamy mashed potatoes, pour the juicy beef and gravy over the top, and serve while everything is nice and hot.
